Responsible Gambling

Gambling should be a form of entertainment you can afford to lose — never a way to make money or fix a financial problem. This page explains how to stay in control, how to recognise when play has stopped being fun, and where to get free, confidential help.

Gambling is entertainment, not income

The single most important habit for staying safe is to treat gambling as a paid-for leisure activity, in the same way you might budget for a night out, a streaming subscription or a football match ticket. You pay for the experience, and any winnings are a bonus rather than the point. The moment you start to rely on gambling to top up your income, clear a debt or recover money you have already lost, the activity has changed into something that can cause real financial and emotional harm.

Two mindsets cause most of the damage. The first is treating gambling as an investment — expecting it to pay out over time when, mathematically, the house edge means the operator wins in the long run. The second is chasing losses: increasing your stakes to win back what you have lost. Chasing almost always deepens the hole. If you would not be comfortable losing the money with nothing to show for it, do not stake it.

Set limits before you play

Deciding your limits while calm and clear-headed is far more effective than trying to stop in the heat of a losing session. Set three kinds of limit and write them down:

  • Deposit limits — a firm cap on how much money you will put into your account in a day, week or month. Decide this from your disposable income only: the money left after rent or mortgage, bills, food, savings and other commitments are covered.
  • Loss limits — the maximum you are willing to lose in a single session. When you reach it, you stop, full stop — regardless of how "due" a win feels.
  • Time limits — how long you will play in one sitting. Long sessions erode judgement and make it easy to lose track of spending. Use a phone alarm as a hard cut-off.

Practical guardrails help you keep to these limits: only ever gamble with money you can genuinely afford to lose; never gamble with borrowed money, an overdraft or a credit card; never gamble to escape stress, boredom, low mood or grief; take regular breaks; and never mix gambling with alcohol or drugs, which weaken self-control. Keep gambling a small part of a balanced life, not the centre of it.

Signs of problem gambling — a checklist

Answer honestly. If several of these ring true, it is worth reaching out for support today:

  • You spend more money or time gambling than you intended, or find it hard to stop.
  • You chase losses — betting more to win back money you have lost.
  • You gamble with money meant for bills, rent, food or family.
  • You borrow money, sell possessions or hide spending to keep gambling.
  • You lie to family, friends or yourself about how much you gamble.
  • You feel restless, anxious or irritable when you try to cut down or stop.
  • You gamble to escape worry, low mood, loneliness or stress.
  • Gambling is affecting your work, studies, sleep, relationships or health.
  • You have thought that life might not be worth living because of gambling debts.

Self-exclusion and non-GamStop sites

This is a point every UK player needs to understand clearly. Non-GamStop sites are casinos and bookmakers licensed offshore — in jurisdictions such as Curaçao, Anjouan, Malta or Costa Rica — and they are not part of the UK's GamStop self-exclusion scheme and hold no UK Gambling Commission licence. GamStop is a free national scheme that lets you block yourself from every UKGC-licensed gambling website and app in one step. Because offshore operators do not check the GamStop register, registering with GamStop does not block you from them.

The practical consequence is that on non-GamStop sites, self-exclusion is per-operator only. You can ask an individual offshore casino to close or freeze your account, and reputable operators offer cooling-off periods and self-exclusion tools, but each request covers that one site — it does nothing about the hundreds of others. There is no single offshore "master switch". If you originally signed up to GamStop because gambling was harming you, we strongly encourage you to keep that boundary in place rather than seeking out sites that ignore it.

If you want the broadest single block available in the UK, register with GamStop at gamstop.co.uk. To cover offshore and unlicensed sites as well, use blocking software (below).

Blocking software

Because GamStop cannot reach offshore operators, device-level blocking software is the most reliable way to shut yourself off from gambling sites entirely — including non-GamStop ones. These tools run on your phone, tablet and computer and block access to thousands of gambling and gambling-related sites, regardless of where the operator is licensed:

  • Gamban — paid software that blocks gambling sites and apps across all your devices (gamban.com).
  • GamBlock — long-established blocking software for computers and mobile devices (gamblock.com).
  • BetBlocker — a free, registered-charity blocking app you can install in minutes, with scheduling and self-exclusion features (betblocker.org).

Bank blocks too. Most UK banks let you switch on a "gambling block" that declines gambling transactions from your card. Combined with blocking software, this adds a helpful extra layer of friction.

Frequently asked questions

  • Does GamStop block non-GamStop casinos?

No. GamStop only blocks gambling operators licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. Offshore, non-GamStop sites are not part of the scheme and do not check the register, so a GamStop registration will not stop you accessing them. To block those sites, use device-level software such as Gamban, GamBlock or BetBlocker, and switch on your bank's gambling block.

  • Can I self-exclude from a non-GamStop site?

Only from that individual operator. Non-GamStop casinos are licensed offshore, so any self-exclusion or cooling-off request you make applies to that one site alone — there is no single scheme that covers them all. That is why blocking software is the most reliable way to shut off access to every gambling site at once.

  • How do I set deposit and loss limits?

Decide your limits in advance from disposable income only, then set them as hard rules: a maximum you will deposit per day, week or month, and a maximum you will lose in one session. Many operators offer built-in limit tools in your account settings; where they do not, use a bank gambling block and blocking software to enforce the boundary for you.

  • Who can I talk to right now for free?

The National Gambling Helpline run by GamCare is free and open 24 hours a day on 0808 8020 133, with live chat at gamcare.org.uk. If you are in crisis or having thoughts of self-harm, call Samaritans free on 116 123 at any time, or 999 in an emergency.
